Adversaries may abuse Office add-ins to execute code when an Office application starts and thereby maintain persistence. ATT&CK T1137.006 includes several add-in types, such as Word/Excel WLL or XLL libraries, VBA and automation add-ins, VBA Editor (VBE) add-ins, COM or VSTO add-ins, and Outlook add-ins. Their loading paths and administrative controls differ; an XLL is only one add-in type, and the technique is not limited to COM registration.
