DCSync uses a domain controller's Directory Replication Service Remote Protocol (MS-DRSR) interface to simulate replication and request an account's directory credential data, including its current NTLM hash and, where available and returned, password-history values. A principal with the required replication rights can make the request remotely; code execution on a domain controller is not required.
