A Beacon Object File (BOF) is a C program compiled to a COFF object file and loaded by a C2 agent into its own process. Cobalt Strike Beacon and Havoc Demon support in-memory BOF execution. Fortra also documents that the network-interface resolution used by Cobalt Strike's built-in portscan dialog is implemented as a BOF; this is one internal component, not a claim that every portscan operation is an operator-supplied BOF. Cobalt Strike BOFs run within Beacon without creating a new process and are expected to be short and single-threaded. In-process execution can reduce child-process artifacts, but it still changes agent memory and behavior and is not inherently undetectable.
