Software packing compresses or encrypts an executable to conceal its code; virtual-machine protection can translate code into a format interpreted by a special runtime. Packing changes file characteristics used by static signatures, and common unpackers restore executable code in memory during execution. This can reduce signature-based detection, but does not guarantee antivirus bypass.
