Modify the local Windows hosts file to map selected hostnames to chosen IP addresses, overriding that machine's normal name resolution and changing where connections go. Malicious mappings can redirect traffic or block selected endpoints, including operating-system or security-service update endpoints. This changes the local hosts file; it does not poison an authoritative DNS server.
