DCSync uses the Directory Replication Service Remote Protocol (DRSR) to request Active Directory replication data from a domain controller for a selected account. An identity with effective directory-replication rights can retrieve sensitive account material, including NTLM password hashes and available Kerberos keys. This operation does not itself grant Domain Admin privileges; the required permissions must already exist on the domain naming context.
