ESC14 abuses explicit X.509 certificate mappings in AD altSecurityIdentities. In the direct-write scenario, a principal able to modify a target's attribute can map a certificate they control to that target and authenticate with it; this can work with a strong mapping even when DCs reject weak mappings. Other ESC14 variants abuse pre-existing weak mappings such as SubjectOnly, IssuerSubject, or RFC822 and require additional mutable-identifier, certificate-template, and DC mapping conditions. Do not assume weak-mapping variants work on fully updated Windows DCs.
