AD CS vulnerability CVE-2024-49019 (ESC15, also called EKUwu) affects unpatched certificate authorities issuing from Version 1 certificate templates. A crafted certificate request can add Microsoft Application Policies (the szOID_APPLICATION_CERT_POLICIES extension, OID 1.3.6.1.4.1.311.21.10) that the CA incorrectly carries into an issued certificate even when they are not allowed by the template's configured EKUs. An attacker needs effective enrollment rights on a published V1 template and an unpatched issuing CA. Injected policies can include Client Authentication, Certificate Request Agent, or Code Signing. Impersonating another account additionally depends on subject/SAN control and the certificate-mapping rules of the target service; successful issuance or authentication does not itself elevate a local process.
