Use LDAP over TLS to protect LDAP traffic: LDAPS establishes TLS from the start on TCP 636 (or Global Catalog TLS on 3269), while StartTLS upgrades an LDAP connection on TCP 389. Both modes require a server certificate that the client can validate; StartTLS is not a workaround for a missing or invalid certificate. TLS protects the channel but does not bypass authentication, authorization, certificate trust, or LDAP signing/channel-binding policy.
