Use an existing SQL Server linked-server definition from an authenticated connection to query a remote instance under its configured linked-login/security mapping. The originating server must be reachable, and the provider, remote path, login mapping, and remote permissions must support the requested operation. Remote identity is mapping-dependent, not automatically a service account or sysadmin. Optional xp_cmdshell execution is separate and conditional: it is disabled by default on new installations and runs as the SQL Server service account for sysadmin callers or the configured proxy account for non-sysadmin callers. Access to the originating SQL Server is required; Internet exposure is not implied.
