dig is the BIND 9 command-line DNS lookup utility. It sends queries to a chosen name server (or the system-configured resolver), displays DNS answers, and supports record types such as A, AAAA, MX, NS, and TXT. It can also request an AXFR zone transfer when the DNS server permits it; AXFR is an administrative replication function and must be used only against zones for which the operator is authorized.
